How early to arrive at SFO: the airport asks you to be there two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Plan your pickup time back from that, adding the drive and a margin for traffic. Then check two things: which terminal your airline uses, and where you can be dropped off.
This guide walks through each step of an SFO departure, from the time you leave home to the security line, and how we plan an iBlack pickup around it.
How early to arrive at SFO for your flight
SFO's travel tips page asks passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure for domestic flights and three hours before international flights. That is time at the airport, before you check bags and go through security. Your airline may ask for more, so check its website as well, especially if you are checking bags or flying abroad.
To set a pickup time, work backward from your departure:
- Start with the time you need to be at the terminal (two or three hours before the flight).
- Add the drive from your home, hotel or office.
- Add a margin for traffic and for the drop-off itself.
You don't need to do the math alone. When you book an SFO airport transfer, send us your flight time and terminal, and dispatch sets the pickup with a buffer built in.
Find your terminal before you leave
SFO has four terminals: Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3 and the Dianne Feinstein International Terminal. SFO is a hub for United Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Airlines do move between terminals, so check SFO's list of airlines and terminals or your airline's app on the day you fly.
Put the terminal on your reservation. If you are flying United from Terminal 3, add your gate area too (D, E or F), because it decides where you check in.
Getting dropped off at Terminal 3
SFO is rebuilding the west side of Terminal 3. While the work goes on, SFO says on its Terminal 3 construction page that the departures curb and drop-off lane are closed between Doors 6 and 13. Its advice:
- In the morning, get dropped off at Terminal 2 or on the Terminal 3 arrivals level to avoid congestion.
- If you have no bags to check, get dropped off at Terminal 2 and go through security there.
- United passengers flying from D and E gates check in at the United counters on the west side of Terminal 2.
- United passengers flying from F gates check in at the Terminal 3 counters.
When SFO announced these changes, it said the curb closure would last until 2027. Closures can change, so check SFO's page the day before your flight, and put your airline and gate area on the reservation.
Moving between terminals on AirTrain
If you are dropped off at one terminal and fly from another, AirTrain and the walkways connect them. According to SFO's Getting Around SFO page:
- AirTrain runs 24 hours a day, with departures as often as every four minutes.
- The Red Line loops through all terminals, the terminal garages and the BART station in about nine minutes.
- The Terminal 3 AirTrain station is closed until the new facility opens in 2027. Use the combined Terminals 2 and 3 station instead.
- Maintenance between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. can make AirTrain run differently and take longer, so allow extra time on a late-night or very early trip.
All terminals are also linked by walkways, both before and after security.
Security at SFO: PreCheck, CLEAR and checkpoint hours
SFO's check-in and security page lists what to expect:
- Each security checkpoint has general, TSA PreCheck, Priority Line and CLEAR lanes.
- With a boarding pass for the same day, you can use any checkpoint in any terminal and then walk to all gates.
- The checkpoints open between 3:15 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., depending on the checkpoint. That matters on a first flight of the morning.
- The page also shows current wait times for each checkpoint, which is worth a look before you leave.
Bring an accepted ID. Since May 7, 2025, state driver's licenses and IDs that are not REAL ID compliant are no longer accepted at airport checkpoints, SFO notes.
How an iBlack departure pickup works
Here is what we need from you, and what we do with it:
- Your flight details. Send the airline, flight number and terminal when you book. Dispatch confirms a flat, all-inclusive quote, usually within the hour.
- A buffer. For departures, we build in the buffer to get you to the gate unhurried.
- Early flights. Dispatch runs 24/7, including early departures and red-eye flights.
- Your bags. Your chauffeur handles the bags and the doors at pickup and at the curb.
Choose the car by the size of your group and your luggage. A Luxury Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class) carries 2 passengers and 2 bags. A Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade ESV or similar) carries 5 passengers and 5 bags. For a larger group, the Luxury Sprinter seats 13 with room for 13 bags.
If you are flying over the holiday, our SFO Thanksgiving travel guide covers the busiest days of that week. For more on how we serve the airport, see our SFO airport page.
