For SFO Thanksgiving travel this year, plan to be at the airport two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. Leave home earlier than usual on Tuesday, Wednesday and the Sunday after the holiday, when the roads and the terminals are busiest. When you fly home, your iBlack chauffeur meets you inside the terminal with a name board.

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. This guide covers how busy SFO got last year, when to leave, what changed at the Terminal 3 curb, and how pickup works when you land.

How busy SFO gets for Thanksgiving travel

SFO says Thanksgiving 2025 was its busiest on record. Between Thursday, November 20 and Monday, December 1, the airport served more than 1.8 million travelers, passing the 1.78 million it served over Thanksgiving 2019.

Across the country, TSA screened more than 3.1 million people on Sunday, November 30, 2025, the most it has ever screened in a single day. NerdWallet's review of TSA numbers found that the Sunday after Thanksgiving was the busiest day of the holiday week in each year from 2021 to 2025, and that Thanksgiving Day itself was the quietest.

For 2026, that points to these days:

  • Tuesday, November 24 and Wednesday, November 25: the outbound rush
  • Thursday, November 26: usually the quietest day at the airport
  • Sunday, November 29: the heaviest day for flights home

When to leave for SFO

Start with SFO's own advice: arrive two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Your airline may ask for more, so check its website as well.

Then add time for the road. For Thanksgiving 2025, INRIX expected the worst traffic on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons before the holiday, and heavy traffic for most of Sunday. Its advice, published in AAA's holiday forecast, was to drive in the morning: before noon on Tuesday, and before 11 a.m. on Wednesday and Sunday. That forecast covered major highways across the country, so treat it as a rough guide for the Bay Area.

When you book an SFO airport transfer, send us your flight number and terminal. For departures, we build in a buffer so you get to the gate unhurried. If you are checking bags or traveling with children, mention it when you book.

Dispatch runs 24/7, including for early departures and red-eye flights.

Getting dropped off: the Terminal 3 change

If you fly United, read this before you go. In October 2025, SFO announced that the Terminal 3 departures curb would close from Doors 6 through 13 until 2027 while Terminal 3 West is rebuilt. SFO recommends drop-off at Terminal 2 or on the Terminal 3 arrivals level.

United also moved some of its check-in counters. For flights from D and E gates, check in at the United counters in Terminal 2. For flights from F gates, check in at Terminal 3.

Add your airline, flight number and terminal to the reservation, and your gate if you know it. SFO posts changes at flysfo.com, so check it the day before you fly.

Where your driver meets you when you land

SFO doesn't allow cars to wait at the terminal curb, and arriving passengers can't be met at the gate. So your chauffeur parks and comes inside to meet you.

Here is how pickup works at SFO's terminals:

  • We track your flight live. If you land early, land late or your flight is diverted, the pickup time moves with it.
  • Your chauffeur waits inside the terminal, at baggage claim or in the arrivals hall, holding a name board.
  • They help with your bags and walk you to the car.
  • Airport arrivals include 45 minutes of free wait time, counted from when you actually land.
  • Prefer to be picked up at the curb? Note it on the reservation.

Holiday weekends bring weather delays too. On last year's record Sunday, FlightAware counted more than 1,000 cancelled flights and over 13,000 delays across the country, ABC News reported. Because we track your flight, a late landing moves your pickup without a call from you.

If you can't find your chauffeur, call dispatch at (888) 491-3088. Dispatch answers 24/7.

Which car for a Thanksgiving trip

Holiday trips usually mean more bags. Three cars in our fleet suit the airport run:

  • First Class (Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar): 2 passengers, 2 bags
  • Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade ESV or similar): 5 passengers, 5 bags
  • Luxury Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz high-roof Sprinter van): 13 passengers, 13 bags, for a family flying in together

Tell dispatch how many people are traveling and how many bags you have, and we'll match the vehicle.

Book early for Thanksgiving week

Earlier is better for airport rides, especially if you need one of the larger vehicles. You get one flat quote before you confirm. Tolls are included. Gratuity is not included and is always optional.

Reserve your car online, or call (888) 491-3088.
